After years of hints and rumor it looks like a Firefly MMO might just actually get made. Browncoats rejoice!
I’ve followed the tidbits for years, hoping something like this might happen. Seeing this announcement and a real live FireFly MMO website going up has finally given me hope!
Firefly was a TV series created by Joss Whedon. It didn’t even make it a full season, tragically being canceled by Fox for various reported reasons. The truth is, it was one of the most intelligent, funny, complex and brilliant shows ever. Unfortunately America’s thirst for inane reality shows pushed this gem off the air.

Fox aired only 11 episodes but they had created 13 before they were officially canceled. The show was just getting great when the Fox execs pulled the rug out from under them.If you know anything about how Joss writes his characters you know that he works hard to create deep, interesting characters that have many levels to them. It seems they felt that this slow, careful character creation was too slow paced for the time.
Fans of the show, calling themselves Browncoats, tried ridiculously hard to resurrect the series, gaining the movie “Serenity” for their trouble (thank you Universal Pictures), and very successful yearly charity screenings of Serenity: http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/

Serenity gave the cast, crew and Joss a chance to wrap things up. The problem was that even then Firefly was not as well known and loved as it is today. The movement was still growing… and grows to this day! Since 2005, fans of the show have had only the series DVDs and some intriguing cosplay to buoy their spirits. Until now!
The next step in the evolution is here! The ‘verse is being brought back to life by the hard work of DarkCryo Entertainment and the hard working indie developers who are willing to put the love they have for the ‘verse into Firefly Universe Online. There’s not a lot of info on it yet, but it is exciting nonetheless!
This effort being put forth by DarkCryo could go down in the history books as the first, and hopefully, massively successful MMO game designed and created by the fans themselves. They are building a network of indie developers and freelance designers to help them forge the game. You can become part of this evolution in the gaming industry. On their website there is a section that you can sign up to be a freelance designer and they are still seeking all kinds of help. This is a chance to break into the gaming industry. Its a chance to have your hand in the making of the Firefly ‘verse. It is our opportunity to make something real and push this whole genre to the next level.

June, 2011 – Fellow Browncoats, the indie crew of DarkCryo Entertainment this week announced that they are taking over where Fox and Multiverse had stranded fans of the cancelled television series Firefly with their intention to continue development of the long-awaited Firefly MMORPG interactive title.
Already titled Firefly Universe Online, the game highlights multiple playable factions, special cast appearances, canonical planetary environments, and groundbreaking role-play mechanics. A release date for Firefly Universe Online has not yet been set, although development efforts have already been well underway for some time now.
Firefly Universe Online is seeking official endorsement by 20th Century Fox and Mutant Enemy Inc, however it will proceed in the interim under fair use as an unauthorized canonical parody, a tribute to the fans, the beloved cast, and creator Joss Whedon.
