logo-the-old-republicNo game like Star Wars : The Old Republic (SWTOR) has captured my attention since Dungeons and Dragons Online was released. Everyone knows that I am a hard core D&D junky through and through but a large part of me is a gamer of all genre’s.

MMO’s have had a special allure to me because of the communities, the every expanding and changing worlds, and the vast amount of things to accomplish in them. MMO’s are by far the best value for your money than other types of games.

space-combat-001I have played about a dozen other games during the time when Dungeons and Dragons Online has been live and none of them have been able to keep my attention. Each one is a clone of the next and so many try to be like WOW but not like WOW. Few have been innovative in offering new types of gameplay, stories or mechanics. DDO has great combat, amazing character customization and they are working hard to fill the large holes they have had in the game such as guild housing and crafting. These changes keep DDO as my primary MMO that I play.

warzones-005SWTOR looks like it may be a serious challenge to my DDO time. They are saying it has deep, voiced over stories, including your own character. They are touting a deep quest and faction system that may change the game later depending on your own decisions. This could add a depth to the game that is yet unseen in MMO’s.

There are a few systems that I have grown weary of, the biggest one is combat. No matter how flashy and particle effect ridden it may be, button mashing is button mashing. So many other MMO’s have said they have live action combat, a more FPS style, and none have lived up to it, save DDO. I know many people in DDO do not utilize the very sophisticated twitch based combat you can enjoy in DDO, it is still there if you want to use it. I hope to see something like this in SWTOR. If it is another game based on auto attack and button mashing it will have a hard time keeping my attention. DDO has spoiled me and until a game has FPS like action as DDO already has it will not be able to ultimately win me over.

flashpoint-001However, this doesn’t mean I will not be trying SWTOR. Many gamers are beginning to expand their MMO portfolios to more than just one. This has become much easier with the many free to play models out there. We will just have to see what SWTOR has to offer us MMO gamers and Star Wars fans.

directive-7I am really looking forward to SWTOR and what it may have to offer. I hold judgment until I have played it but I have high hopes for it. Don’t worry though, this doesn’t mean I will be shelving DDO anytime soon. It is likely I will play DDO and support it through DDM’s Realm until the servers go dark.
